Alice In Wonderland Silent Movie

The BFI have recently restored the original silent movie of Alice in Wonderland made in 1903.

The damage to the film only makes it more charming, and it's impressive that they achieved this more than 100 years ago.

The Bafta's 2010

On Sunday the glitz and glammarati congregated at the Royal Opera House to celebrate the British Academy of Film and Television Arts 2010. Hosting proceedings was the ever floppy haired Wossy, who distilled some quirky charm among the well polished celebrity figurines but his humour was watered down for the evening.

The clear success was Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker which ran away with an impressive six awards, including director, original screenplay, editing, sound, cinematography and most importantly best film. She did well to ward off her ex-husband - James Cameron's Avatar advances, as the big budget sci-fi super epic was nominated eight times but only left with a couple of awards for special visual effects and production design, which makes sense since the film is more about the beautifully immersive environment and less about the Ferne Gully story line.

And the British didn't do too badly either garnering multiple nominations in all categories, Colin Firth won best leading actor for his role in A Single Man and Carey Mulligan won best leading actress for her portrayal of Jenny Miller in An Education. Andrea Arnold's independent movie Fish Tank deservedly won Outstanding British Film for it's gritty realism depicting life for young girls growing up on an Essex council estate. So perhaps this year is going to be all about female contributions to film, after her achievements at the Baftas there's much hype pitting Kathryn Bigelow to win best director at the Oscars too.

It was a shame that District 9 didn't win anything, with such a confident silver screen debut I thought Neil Blomkamp should have won best adapted screeenplay for his political apartheid commentary that morphs into a ball-busting action film half way through and climaxes with alien tentacle arms and celestial mecha-suits.
